Etymotic Research ER-6s sound great and have some nice attenuation (34-36 dB).

My drum teacher says it's almost always better to have open cans, because its better to hear the actual sound of your instrument, rather than the mix coming out of the board - you might change the mix later, but you can't change the sound of your instrument. Personally, i prefer closed phones - i can get them louder so i can hear better. I find it a lot easier to play hearing myself and the backing well.

The Drum Phones stay in place, but after a couple of hours my ears are a bit sore from them snugly squeezing my head.

I did some recording this weekend using my Shure in-ear monitors. We were just tracking drums, so I had the guitars, bass, and click going through the phones and took out my right monitor and replaced it with one of my custom ear plugs. It worked out well.

Thanks for your expertise guys!
I'm looking into those of the suggestions I haven't checked out yet. It's not easy, though.
I'll go hunting
